Child Friendly Days Out
West Wales offers a fantastic array of places to visit and activities for child friendly days out while staying at Cwmcrwth Farm & Holiday Cottages in West Wales. Here are just a few of our guests’ favourite things to do. For rainy day ideas click here
Pembrey Country Park & Cefn Sidan Beach
A huge expanse of sandy beach and a huge green country park to run around, no wonder this is a favourite on our child friendly days out list.
The country park offers a large area to play, plus dry ski slope and fun toboggan run. There’s crazy golf and pitch and putt to keep you occupied. You can walk through the woods or hire cycles, walk along the coastal path or just play on the beach. Watch the kite surfers.
Llansteffan Beach & Castle
Llansteffan is about a 35 minute drive from Cwmcrwth Farm & Holiday Cottages. A quiet beach without the amusements and attractions of the more commercial centres. A small play area for the children as well as the sandy beach and rock pooling area at Scotts Bay.
Climb to the top of the castle and reward yourselves when you get back down with fish and chips freshly cooked in the cabin or tea and cake from the tea rooms.
Tenby
Pembrokeshire’s best known seaside town and very popular with families. 3 sandy beaches to choose from, a lovely harbour to wander around and plenty of shops, cafes and amusements to keep the children happy. About a 45 minute drive from the farm.
Newquay
A popular seaside destination on the Cardigan coast about an hours drive. A quaint old fishing village with narrow streets and interesting little shops. Stand on the quay and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins in the bay. Boat trips run frequently if you want the chance of getting up close to the dolphins.
Folly Farm & Zoo
Folly Farm is a must visit day for families with young children. Great whatever the weather and so much to see and do. Zoo animals from Lions and Giraffes to pigs and donkeys in the farm. Lots of outdoors and indoors play areas and the fabulous vintage fairground.
NT Dinefwr
Dinefwr is only 3 or so miles from the farm and makes a fantastic day or half day out after a long drive. Many of our guests are National Trust members so visit several times during their stay. During the school holidays they lay on activities for children from making bird feeders, badger watching to Easter egg hunts.
You may not automatically think of taking the children to a NT property but Newton House is a little different. The furniture and contents are not original to the house so visitors are welcome to touch them. You can even play the piano and on wet days it has been know for visitors to play badminton in the dining room. The above and below stairs tours are recommended as is the tea rooms!
Outside you have the choice of numerous way marked walks. Depending on the time of year you visit the woodland walk is awash with bluebells. The boardwalk takes you around the lakes or you can choose to walk through the deer park. On certain days join the rangers to help feed them. Check out the rare White Park Cattle during your visit and don’t forget to walk to the top of the castle.
Castles
Castles are a great favourite with families and with 9 to visit in Carmarthenshire alone, you don’t even have to start exploring those over the border. Take a look at our page all about castles
Steam Railways
Children love a ride on a steam railway and we are lucky enough to have 3 sites reasonably close to the farm. Gwili Steam Railway is the closest near Carmarthen. Take a drive up towards Newcastle Emlyn and you will find the Teifi Valley Railway. But if you are looking for a longer ride the Brecon Mountain railway is definitely worth a visit
Dinosaur Park & National Showcaves DAN Y OGOF
For any parent of a dinosaur mad child Dan y Ogof is a great day out with over 220 life sized dinosaur models to find. On site you can also visit the spectacular National Showcaves and the Shire Horse centre and farm.
National Botanic Gardens
Again not one that immediately shouts out to families with young children but during the school holidays they run lots of activities for children. And very weekend there’s an event from craft demonstrations to family fun days. There’s also a large play area with zip wire and zorb balls and straw maze during the summer.
Children enjoy spotting the butterflies in the hot house and Pembrokeshire Falconry now have a permanent site at the gardens where you can get up close with the birds.
There’s plenty of space to run around and walks suitable for all the family.
NT Dolaucothi Goldmines
A firm favourite with our guests. Children love panning for gold and exploring the mines. Dress up in mining kit and follow the fabulous tours, really worthwhile. Finish with a walk around the woods and enjoy a picnic in the grounds. Alternatively visit the on site tea room.
Red Kite Centre
Red kite can be seen flying above the farm but a visit to the Red Kite feeding centre gives you the chance to get up close and see the birds at the feeding station.
Skomer Island
One of our favourite days out! Take a short boat ride from Dale to the wildlife haven of Skomer Island. Fabulous walks around the island will bring you toe to toe with the puffins during nesting season. Seals and their pups can be seen on the rocky outcrops and guillemots constantly fly overhead. Families can have a great day out on the secluded Island enjoying nature. Remember to take a picnic.
Waterparks
Check out our rainy day suggestions for details on waterparks and swimming pools to visit.
WWT llanelli
The wetlands centre in Llanelli offers a great day out with lots for the little ones to do. Who doesn’t love a flamingo? Bug hunting and pond dipping activities plus school holiday fun with Puddle Splashing Championships, the Great Duck Hunt at Easter and the Lego Bird trail. There’s a play area and an indoor soft play so plenty for the children.
Horse Riding
If your children have enjoyed a ride on Millie and Dom our donkeys, how about stepping one up to a pony or horse? A favourite idea for child friendly days out for our visitors is Marros Riding about a 40 minute drive from the farm. With an indoor school for wet days and an opportunity to ride through the woods there are plenty of options. Competent riders can even take a beach ride. Alternatively a slightly cheaper option for first timers is Pembrey Riding Centre. Competent riders can also beach ride with them.
Heatherton
Heatherton activity centre makes a great child friendly days out. From Pirates Crazy Golf to HIgh Ropes, Shooting to Go Karting, Paintballing to Escape Rooms. Heatherton has lots to offer children of all ages. No entrance fee and just pay for the activities you want to take part in.
